Organisational Change

How to prepare employees and managers for organisational change

Change is unsettling by default. With the right preparation and communication, it doesn't have to be. A practical guide to managing change well.

How to prepare employees and managers for organisational change

Organisational change - whether growth, restructuring or a shift in direction - is one of the most testing periods for any business. The way it is handled often matters more than the change itself.

Be clear about why

People accept change far more readily when they understand the reason for it. Vague or inconsistent messaging breeds uncertainty. A clear, honest explanation of what is changing and why is the foundation of everything that follows.

Prepare your managers first

Managers are the channel through which most employees experience change. If they are unprepared, the message becomes muddled. Equip them early, give them the context to answer questions, and make sure they are saying the same thing.

Communicate more than feels necessary

During change, silence is filled with rumour. Regular, even when there is little new to say, communication maintains trust. Tell people what you know, what you don't know yet, and when you will tell them more.

Support the human side

Change affects real people. Acknowledging that - and providing genuine support through the process - is not a soft extra. It is what allows a business to come through change with its team and reputation intact.
